Workshop Series: “Duurzaam Ouder Worden”

In collaboration with Aediz, we are organizing a workshop series related to elderly care (home care, continued participation of the elderly in the future society, e-Health, new business models, etc.).

The series encompasses two sessions targeted at IE&IS researchers:

  1. an two-hour introductory workshop where Aediz presents its vision to various researchers of the TU/e IE&IS department and where these researchers propose candidate follow-up projects,
  2. a two-hour closing session where research meets practice and where concrete follow-up agreements are made. This session will also involve participation from nursing home managers etc. A Dutch announcement for health practitioners can be found here.

Title PHR implementation at Sint Maartenskliniek

Abstract Patient are getting more and more involved in their medical treatment, people are going digital and do lots of things online. This movement will also have an effect on healthcare, this ranges from comparing doctors and hospitals, to keeping their own health records. This has led to the introduction of Personal Health Records (PHR). In the Netherlands there are a few leaders in this area. The board of directors of the Sint Maartenskliniek has decided it wants to provide patient access to as much information as possible. They are looking for the easiest way to gain a position amongst the leaders in this area.

Master Thesis Graduation: Pieter Dat

On November 22nd, Pieter Dat defended his master thesis entitled “Business process simulation in healthcare: the applicability of general-purpose and application-oriented simulation software”.

In this thesis, Pieter compared FlexSim HealthCare against CPNTools based on two case studies.  FlexSim HC provides healthcare-specific 3D animations as well as widgets for conveniently modeling agenda’s of human resources involved in health processes.  CPNTools does not provide such features but provides opportunities for modeling the overall process more explicitly.

Pieter’s first case study relates to patient flows while his second case study relates to goods logistics.

Pieter used Moody’s Method Evaluation Model in combination with a framework specific to simulation tool evaluation.  The thesis concludes that FlexSim HC has advantages for simulation studies related to patient flows while the two approaches are comparable when in comes to goods logistics.

Update (14/02/2013): A related blog post has been published on the official FlexSim website.
